India orders Harpoon Missiles from the U.S. for Navy Submarines


Indian Navy acquires 22 more Harpoon Missiles from the United States. The US Department of Defence awarded $81.27 million to Boeing to supply 22 Harpoon missiles to Indian Navy. The complete deal could be of $200 Million inclusive of containers, spare and repair parts.

The missiles are expected to be ready in June 2018.

Why do Indian Navy acquired Harpoon Missiles?

Harpoon Missiles will be used in the Shishumas class submarine to enhance for defence of critical sea lines of communication.

"India has already purchased Harpoon Missiles for integration on Indian Air Forces Jaguar aircraft and Indian Navy's P-81 Maritime patrol aircraft. India will have no difficulty absorbing these additional missiles into its armed forces." The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency said.

The harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system, developed & manufactured by Boeing Defence, Space & Security.
